I happened upon Jenn one beautiful day as I was scrolling through Instagram. As I came upon her Instagram post, I clicked through to her profile page. Instantly, I fell in love with her business and her motivation behind her service. With happiness, I introduce to you Jenn Collins of Mama Needs Box – a done-for-you self-care in a monthly subscription box.

After reaching out to Jenn about becoming a Women Making Waves feature, we asked her to complete a questionnaire telling us about she and her business. Here’s what she had to say:

Tell Us About Your Business

I’m Jenn Collins, owner and Chief Self-Care Officer of the Mama Needs Subscription Box and host of The Mama Needs Podcast. I’m also wife to my high school sweetheart for 15 years and Mama to 3 amazing kids ages 11, 8 and 4! I’m on a mission to help Mamas understand the need for self-care and give them the tools and inspiration to prioritize it.

Mama Needs Boxes are curated subscription boxes filled with self-care tools, books, snacks, beauty/spa products and so much more. Every month is themed! Here are some examples: “Mama Needs Coffee”, “Mama Needs a Spa Day”, “Mama Needs Joy”. We have month-to-month options, one-time gifts and pre-paid options for 3, 6 and 12 months. Our boxes include not only the goodies inside but 10 self-care tips and a free Spotify playlist. They are beautifully designed and Mamas love them because they’re done-for-you.

What Inspired You To Start Your Business

I started this subscription box and our podcast as my mission to help Mamas practice self-care out of my own journey I’ve been on as a Mama. Years ago I didn’t even know the word “self-care” existed and I put myself on the back burner for way too long. Doing that took a toll on my body, heart and mind and caused me to nearly have a nervous breakdown. I don’t ever want anyone to feel the way I did. That’s why I created this box: monthly done-for-you self-care that arrives at your door filled with the tools and encouragement to make time for you.

How Do You Want To Make Your Mark In Your Industry?

I don’t want to be part of the noise or just jumbled in with the buzz word that has now become self-care. It goes deeper than that for me. I want to start a movement and I am on a mission to help Mamas remember that they matter. I’m not here to sell self-care; I’m here to change the mindsets of Mamas which then affects their families and generations to come. The impact is endless.

Who Inspires You?

Women and Moms who are making a difference but also helping their families. Jessica Honneger of Noonday Collection is someone who inspired me through her book “Imperfect Courage”.

What gave you the courage to move forward despite setbacks and fears that you may have experienced? What were some of your fears? If not now, when?

Fear has always been a huge part of my life since I was a child. It has held me back from so much. Before starting this business, I had fears of rejection, failure, that people wouldn’t “get” what I’m doing and on and on and on. Honestly, it was paralyzing. But what was even more paralyzing was the thought of doing nothing when I knew that I was made to more more. I am still learning everyday, I have definitely faced rejection and failure. But my mission is bigger than all of that and that’s what I keep my eye on. So I move forward, knowing that what I’m doing is making a difference, albeit small, and this is only the beginning.

What Excites You About Your Business?

Seeing Moms get their boxes and dive in! I love to see their faces, hear their excitement and know that the box solved some kind of problem for them. I’ve had many Moms tell me how spoiled they feel and that they’re so glad they did this for themselves.

What Is Your Favorite Service/Item That You Offer?

As much as I love our boxes and how much fun they are to put together – the podcast is my favorite. It’s free for anyone to listen and the women I’ve met and spoken with have truly touched my heart forever. Some of the stories I have heard and shared with my listeners are unbelievable but I feel like Mamas want to hear REAL stories. They want to feel like their deepest thoughts aren’t crazy. They want to know that they’re not alone. And they want to laugh. The podcast provides all of that and so much more.

Where Do You See Your Business Heading In The Future?

On the subscription side, I would love to see us get to thousands of subscribers in the next 5 years! I would love to hire other Mamas to join the Mama Needs Box team and do this work alongside me. I would love the podcast to reach tens and hundreds of thousands. I have so many Mamas I would love to interview in the future. And, I’ve never documented this anywhere, but I would love to have a brick and mortar store. A place where Mamas can go (sans kids) to connect with other Mamas, get pampered, maybe buy a little something to try at home, drink some coffee (or wine) and just breathe for a bit.

How Do You See Your Products/Services Making An Impact On The World?

I see Mama’s mindsets shifting from just surviving the day to THRIVING. From thinking they don’t matter to knowing they are fearfully and wonderfully made and nothing was an accident. From wondering if they’re all alone in how they feel to knowing it’s OK to be vulnerable with safe people and that everyone feels that way. To wondering how to “be” a Mama and learning hacks, tips and tricks from seasoned Mamas who have already been down that road. To smile more. To have courage to do scary things. To love their kids fiercely. To create a paradigm shift around how they feel, think, act and believe which in turn will change the course of their families forever.
